Background of the study:
Flood control is a critical issue in Ughelli South Local Government Area, where indigenous methods have historically been employed to manage seasonal flooding. The community’s traditional knowledge, passed down through generations, includes the construction of earthen embankments, the use of natural barriers, and communal labor to reinforce flood defenses (Uche, 2023). Recent climate variability has intensified flooding, prompting renewed interest in these indigenous techniques as sustainable alternatives to modern engineering solutions (Obi, 2024). Research highlights that these methods are not only cost-effective but also culturally significant, reinforcing community resilience and environmental harmony (Ifeoma, 2023). However, the integration of indigenous practices with contemporary flood management strategies remains limited. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of traditional methods, exploring their potential role in current flood mitigation policies, and to evaluate how local communities perceive these methods in the context of modern environmental challenges.
Statement of the problem:
Despite the long-standing use of indigenous flood control methods in Ughelli South, there is a lack of systematic evaluation regarding their effectiveness in the face of increasing flood incidents. Modern flood management strategies often overlook these culturally rooted practices, potentially missing cost-effective and sustainable alternatives. This study seeks to address this gap by assessing indigenous methods and their integration into contemporary flood control policies (Uche, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To document indigenous flood control practices in Ughelli South.
To evaluate the effectiveness of these traditional methods.
To propose a framework for integrating indigenous methods with modern flood management strategies.
Research questions:
What indigenous methods are used for flood control in Ughelli South?
How effective are these methods compared to modern techniques?
What are the barriers to integrating indigenous and modern flood management strategies?
Research Hypotheses:
H₀: Indigenous flood control methods have no significant impact on mitigating flood risks.
H₀: There is no difference in effectiveness between indigenous and modern flood control strategies.
H₀: Integration of indigenous practices with modern strategies does not enhance overall flood management.
Significance of the study:
This study underscores the value of indigenous knowledge in flood management, offering cost-effective and culturally relevant solutions that can be integrated with modern techniques to improve flood resilience in the area (Ifeoma, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is confined to evaluating indigenous flood control methods in Ughelli South Local Government Area, without extending to other regions or flood management practices.
